Many workers choose not to report unlawful behavior at work because they are afraid of negative consequences. We have helped many clients save their job by reporting through the right avenues or enforcing their rights against unlawful retaliation and seeking redress from their employer after the fact.
Many state and federal laws can help protect your employment after reporting unlawful conduct. Retaliation can occur in any context against both public and private employees who report discrimination, harassment, the violation of federal statutes, such as work safety laws or financial and securities laws, or any other illegal behavior. Employees who report violations of law are generally called “whistleblowers.”
Examples of retaliation against whistleblowers include:
- Reassignment to a less favorable schedule or location;
- Demotion;
- Failure to be assigned tasks;
- Reduced hours, wages, or overtime opportunities;
- Inaccurate poor performance reviews or discipline; and
- Termination.
